Kaitlyn & Evan — A winter engagement

To Kaitlyn and Evan —

Snow holds light differently than anything else. I had forgotten that until we drove out into the Cascade pass that morning, and the trees were carrying it like they had been asked to pose.

You both wore boots over the wedding-day shoes you weren't going to wear yet. You kept laughing at the cold. The cold kept doing its job, and the photographs found themselves quickly — the way they do when the place is doing most of the work and the people in front of the camera have stopped trying to help.

A short session. A long memory. I will think about that quiet forest for a long time.
